Music Marketing Trends for 2024

Now more than ever, it’s all about harnessing digital platforms to showcase your music. Keeping an eye out for tips and industry hacks, implementing what you learned, and thinking outside the box – these will be your golden ticket to catching more eyes and ears for your music.

So what is expected from artists to market their music effectively? Here are some marketing pointers that you can start implementing ASAP!

Social Media

Social media is no longer just a platform where we post selfies and groupies, share cat memes, and post what’s on our minds. Over time, it became a powerful tool for marketing and even became a source of income. What else? It’s the new concert hall, the new meet-and-greet, the new… well, everything. Social media platforms are evolving into essential tools for musicians. Use them as tools to showcase your music, engage with fans, and even sell merch directly!

Consistent content creation on social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter can also attract sponsorships and brand partnerships. Nowadays, it’s just either you get social or you get left behind.

Streaming Services

Spotify, YouTube Music, Apple Music, and all other streaming platforms are adding more interactive features. With more personalized experiences, it’s about working to get your music on those trending lists and using as many features these platforms offer to boost your visibility to new and sometimes surprising audiences. How do you do this? Playlists and Ads are the number one way to achieve fast growth.

Augmented Reality: The New Frontier

Augmented Reality (AR) in music is not just a fad; it’s the future. Imagine your fans watching your music video with AR elements or attending a virtual concert where they feel like they’re right there with you. AR is making waves, and it’s time to ride them.

Far from being a makeshift remedy for the times we find ourselves in, virtual concerts have emerged as a paradigm-shifting phenomenon. Many artists have hopped on the virtual concert bandwagon. Traditional concerts provide an immersive experience, but it’s mostly passive. Virtual concerts, on the other hand, can change all that. Fans have the freedom to choose their viewpoints, engage with the digital environment, and even have real-time influence on the performance. Some platforms even offer virtual merchandise stalls and enable fans to connect, recreating the social aspect of attending live events and opening up new avenues for revenue for artists.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

AI has become a game-changer in the music industry, especially for indie artists. This isn’t just about fancy algorithms and data, but rather about having a personal music marketing genius at your fingertips!

Imagine an AI tool that not only knows who’s listening to your music but can predict who else might want to. These tools dive deep into data, analyzing your listeners’ habits, preferences, and even their social media activity. This means you can tailor your music, your marketing, and even your merch to perfectly suit your audience. It’s like reading their minds, but less creepy and more helpful.

Now, what if AI could predict the next big trend in music? Or tell you the best time to drop your new track? That’s exactly what’s happening. AI-driven predictive analytics can help you stay ahead of the curve, ensuring you’re not just following trends, but setting them. This technology can analyze patterns in music consumption and social media to suggest when and how to release your songs for maximum impact.

Data Analytics

Data analytics is now becoming every indie artist’s best friend. There’s no need to open multiple apps or tabs to get an in-depth analysis and so is a bird’s eye view of your music and brand’s growth. Instead, you just need to look for your most preferred SaaS to generate the report for you – all data available in a single click.

… And lucky for you, if you’re a member of our Keep It Indie Program, you get to obtain this for FREE! ;)

Short Music Videos

Sometimes, it is the small things that make the most impact. With the constant shortening of people’s attention span nowadays, platforms are prioritizing short, engaging content. Bite-sized music videos and other short-form content can massively help in the growth of your music and your audiences. These mini masterpieces are perfect for catching those scrolling thumbs and turning them into fans. It’s not just about making music; it’s about making it memorable and manageable in a minute or less.

How To Master Fan Relationships?

Gone are the days when fans find it difficult to connect with their favorite artist. We are now in the digital age, where artists are more accessible than ever, and fans feel like they “know” an artist more intimately than ever before. Thus, building an artist-fan relationship is CRUCIAL, especially for independent musicians. But why is it so important for artists and music professionals to build connections?

Staying close to your audience is priceless. It’s like having a direct phone line amidst all the social media noise, creating a space where your fans feel valued.

So how can you create and maintain this connection?

While it could still be challenging to keep your fans engaged and to maintain a relationship with them, the three main key points to reaching this success are as follows:

  1. Build your foundation.

  2. Redefine engagement strategies.

  3. Be consistent with posting content and engage with your fans.

As an artist, you must ask yourself these questions for guidance, so you can come up with strategies that would address your goals:

  • “Who am I trying to reach as an artist?”

  • “How can I reach those potential fans?”

  • “What can I offer to a potential fan as an artist while being true to my artistic goals?”

  • “Do I control my artist identity, intellectual property, and brand across the internet (including future iterations), and how am I achieving this?”

  • “Once I make a fan, do I own the relationship with that fan or am I dependent on a third-party platform in order to maintain that relationship and engagement/interaction?”

  • “Do I actually know anything about who the fan is and how they engage with me as an artist?”

Once you have answered these questions, you shall be able to direct yourself towards realistic goals that will greatly help in the attainment of fan connection success. Still, keep in mind that the journey could be quite rough, but nothing beats DOing SOMETHING. Like any foundation, build step by step. Do not rush. A momentum can not be gained without persistence and dedication to your craft.

Give your audience a variety of content that will keep them hooked and engaged. Be the artist they never had, and allow them to discover the artist as you are.

“In a pool of trends, what content should I make to keep my audience captured?”

If you’re constantly asking “How do I stay relevant?” or “How can I connect with my audiences on another level?”, then we’ve got resources to help you.

We recently rolled the release of our Digital Guide: Social Media Prompts For Independent Artists, which includes 80+ Social Media Contents For When You're Feeling Stuck… But we will not leave you hanging here. So, here are seven of the best!

  1. Share a behind-the-scenes glimpse of your creative process in the studio.

Give your audience a glimpse into your life as a musician and allow them to connect with you on a personal level by sharing snippets of your creative process. May it be the recording in the studio, the creation of lyrics, or just a typical practice day with the band.

  2. Introduce your bandmates or collaborators and share a fun fact about each of them.

Allow your audience to know not just you, but also the people behind your music success. Each member brings their unique talents and quirks to the table, making our creative journey an unforgettable ride, so introduce the incredible individuals who make up our musical family!

  3. Create a poll asking your audience which song they want to see a music video for next.

Invite your audience to engage in a poll to choose the next song deserving of a captivating music video. Let their voices become the compass that guides you in your artistic direction!

  4. Host a Q&A session where your followers can ask you anything about your music career.

Directly engage with your audience by hosting Q&A sessions on social media. This lets them feel that they are supporting a human who they can get in touch with, making them a loyal listener.

  5. Post a teaser for an upcoming music video or single release.

Share previews of upcoming tracks or albums by posting short clips or snippets. Build anticipation and excitement among your followers by giving them a sneak peek of what's up and coming.

  6. Give a shoutout to another independent artist you admire and encourage your followers to check out their music.

Support other independent artists by giving them a shout-out. Encourage them to give your co-artist a follow and give their music a listen, and perhaps work on a music collaboration in the future.

  7. Host a giveaway where you offer exclusive merch or a personalized experience for your fans.

From exclusive content or sneak peek, early access to the new music, exclusive merch and discounts, to behind-the-scenes footage, offer your fans something that will keep them wanting for more! Thus, converting them to a loyal fan.
